Jack Kerouac, 1922-1969
Jack Kerouac was born on March 12, 1922 in Lowell, Massachusetts. His parents were French-Canadian and he spoke only French until he was six-years-old. He attended Columbia University where he played football and wrote for the Columbia Daily Spectator. He dropped out after he was dropped by the football team. Kerouac was married 3 times; he had a daughter Jan with his second wife Joan Haverty.
Jack Kerouac’s first published novel was The Town and The City (1950). He is best-known for his novel On the Road . He finished writing the book in 1951 but it wasn’t published until 1957. It then became an almost instant classic. Kerouac was considered to be part of the Beat Generation of poets and writers, a term he coined. In total, Jack Kerouac published over 30 novels, essays, and collections of poetry.
Jack Kerouac died on October 21, 1969.
